Hmmm... I don't hate it but I'm far from liking it... I might hate it.
I haven't started the lace bit yet and I keep telling myself that I will like it then...I really should have stuck to one colour, or a more subtle blending with looooonng colour changes not this short colour change bizzo. Sigh.
'tis ok tho. I have plan B. First I need to finish knitting then drop the whole thing into a vat of deep red dye - the cream will go red, the red will deepen, the brown will deepen, the yellow will go brown.
Plan C.. if that is a disaster, drop the whole lot into a vat of black/brown dye.
I'll be back a bit later if I can redeem my poor judgement.

I know just what you mean. I don't know how many things I've started knitting with yarn that I LOVED, only to discover that it just was NOT working. I think your backup plans are brilliant though. I betcha it'll look stunning after the first plan - the red dye. It'll get all tonal-like. Can't wait to see.
This is an interesting lesson learnt by you. I use to spin my own wool but did not have this problem as the colours were all browns. I actually like the colours in what you are creating. I dropped in cause I thought you might like my post on history of gnomes
I have had the same trouble with variegated yarns. Now I look up projects made with the yarn, on Ravelry to get an idea of the way the colour pools. (doesn't work for uncommon/artisan dyed yarn).
You could try over-dyeing with onion skins...it should give the deep rust that is already in the yarn. I'd love to see your results!
