Possum

Cute isn't he? Since we moved to our current house just over three years ago we have had so many possums in our roof that we bought our own trap. My sister feeds her family of possums but that is because she doesn't have them living above her head! They fight and make disturbing screeching mating calls, urinate everywhere (and it smells horrid) and I'm quite sure that our erratic loungeroom lighting has quite a bit to do with them tangling their toes in the wiring.
They are seriously easy to catch, it literally only takes minutes (they must have very sensitive nostrils). Take a slice of bread and smear it with peanut butter and some jam, set the trap and wait. You should soon hear thumping as it's bounding little body dances across the beams and then SNAP! the door shuts. Cute but not too bright. This morning I let this juvenile male go up a tree near the dam and he made light work of the climb.

Adorable critter!

We have oppossums - totally different. They eat the cat food we leave out for the neighborhood cats. They also eat any produce we have that is just beyond human consumption (as do the raccoons). I can't imagine dealing with critters in our roof, though!

We are currently having opossum trouble in our garage. We have a safe trap like this but we can't bear to use it. We have 4 feet of snow on the ground and the little guy is just trying to stay warm. He makes quite a racket when he wakes up at night and our dogs go crazy wanting to get to him.

Thank you Cami that is a bit exciting isn't it? perhaps i might have to do a little give away...i wonder if I might be able to whip up a little possum?

Oh, the possum makes me giggle. But that's because we don't have them wreaking havoc in our roof. Heck, we don't have them at all. They are MUCH cuter than boring ol' groundhogs.

He is so very cute... does he prefer strawberry or raspberry jam on his sandwiches? And did you offer him a little cup of milk to wash down his lunch?

P.S. Makes me think of the book by Mem Fox "Possum Magic."
